A 71-year-old fisherman was dragged from shore into a Florida pond and killed by an 11-foot, 8-inch alligator on Friday afternoon, marking the latest deadly encounter with the state’s most dangerous predator. Steve Hamilton died at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park in Winter Garden, a location notorious for alligator activity near Lake Apopka.
Attack Unfolds at Popular Fishing Spot
The attack occurred around 5 p.m. at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park, where multiple small ponds connect to the massive Lake Apopka. Hamilton was standing on shore when the massive reptile struck, pulling him into the water. Witnesses called 911 immediately, with one boyfriend frantically telling dispatchers the situation was bad and pleading for emergency responders to hurry.
Winter Garden Police Captain Michael Mason confirmed the fisherman was on land when the attack began. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission later trapped and removed the nearly 12-foot alligator responsible for Hamilton’s death. The park features a crossing called Gator Bridge, reflecting the well-known presence of these dangerous animals throughout the area.
Lake Apopka’s Notorious Gator Population
Captain Mason emphasized that alligator sightings are completely normal in this region. Lake Apopka contains massive numbers of alligators, making encounters common for anyone fishing or walking near the water. Despite their prevalence, officials warn residents and visitors never to assume these animals are docile. Mason stressed the importance of maintaining distance from local wildlife, noting that what appears calm can turn deadly in seconds.
Florida’s Growing Attack Numbers
While alligator attacks remain relatively uncommon given Florida’s hundreds of thousands of gators, the numbers reveal concerning trends. The state recorded 13 attacks in 2025, including eight major incidents and two fatalities. The year 2022 saw an unusual spike with 23 attacks on humans, nearly double the typical annual total of around a dozen. Since Florida began tracking these incidents in 1948, 32 people have died in alligator attacks. No year has ever recorded more than three fatal encounters, making Hamilton’s death part of a deadly pattern that continues despite repeated wildlife warnings.
