A news helicopter operating for NBC Los Angeles crashed in Chatsworth on Tuesday evening, killing three people including two crew members and one person on the ground, marking a devastating day for Southern California’s media community.
Tragic Evening Unfolds in Chatsworth
The crash occurred just before 7 p.m. on September 16, 2026, while NewsChopper4 provided aerial coverage of a separate fatal bus collision. The helicopter, owned and operated by Angel City Air, went down between two commercial buildings in the northern Los Angeles neighborhood. The impact sparked an immediate fire that destroyed the aircraft and damaged four vehicles and two storage containers in the surrounding area.
Witnesses described the horrifying scene as the helicopter exhibited unusual behavior moments before impact. One observer noted the aircraft appeared to be swaying in flight. Within seconds, massive plumes of smoke rose from the parking lot where the helicopter struck the ground and erupted in flames. Fire Captain Brandon Silverman reported the wreckage was so severe that crews could not identify a tail section.
Victims Identified as Experienced Professionals
Authorities identified the deceased crew members as Eliana Moreno and pilot George Marciniw, both Angel City Air employees. Moreno, an Orange County native and 2010 Chapman University graduate with degrees in broadcast journalism and political science, joined Angel City Air in September 2010. She became a familiar voice across Southern California media outlets. Marciniw, a 1974 Burbank High School graduate who grew up in Southern California, partnered with Moreno beginning in 2023.
Two additional individuals were transported to area hospitals following the crash. Los Angeles Fire Department Battalion Chief Rico Gross confirmed their hospitalization but provided no updates on their conditions. The third fatality occurred on the ground when the helicopter struck the commercial area.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass called it a “very, very, very tragic day in Los Angeles,” expressing condolences for the loss of “five Angelenos” across both incidents. Governor Gavin Newsom issued a statement thanking first responders and extending sympathy to affected families and the NBC4 team.
