Florida Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna faces a federal investigation over allegations she provided advance information about Donald Trump’s 2024 vice presidential pick to a political influencer, enabling profitable bets on prediction market Polymarket.
The Allegations and Investigation
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission launched an investigation after Luna allegedly informed MAGA influencer about Trump’s selection of JD Vance as running mate before the public announcement. The tip reportedly allowed strategic betting on Polymarket, a blockchain-based prediction platform where users wager on political outcomes. The case represents the latest controversy surrounding insider political betting in Washington, adding to growing concerns about elected officials exploiting nonpublic information for financial gain.
Both Luna and the influencer vigorously denied wrongdoing. Luna’s communications director, David Leatherwood, stated the congresswoman had no advance knowledge of Trump’s vice presidential decision. He attributed the allegations to what he called a bitter former associate of Luna’s team, claiming Luna herself filed a complaint with the CTFC that triggered a criminal investigation into the accusations against her.
White House Response and Broader Concerns
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Thursday that Gabriel Perez is cooperating with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission investigation. President Trump called the situation deeply unfortunate and a disgrace, though officials have not specified his exact concerns. The administration previously warned staffers in March against using confidential government information for political betting after three Polymarket accounts earned over $600,000 correctly predicting the timing of an Iran war ceasefire announcement.
Polymarket defended its monitoring practices, stating the platform actively surveils for illegal activity and has referred nearly 100 suspicious wallet accounts to law enforcement. The company emphasized that blockchain transparency allows real-time tracking of all trading activity, enabling both internal teams and the public to identify potentially illegal behavior. A spokesperson noted these referrals resulted in the first and second prediction market insider trading cases ever charged in the United States.
Political Betting Under Scrutiny
The controversy highlights growing tensions between prediction markets and government oversight. While Polymarket allows users to open accounts anonymously, the platform faces increasing pressure to prevent exploitation of inside information. Donald Trump Jr., who advises both Polymarket and competitor platform Kalshi through his venture capital investments, has not been accused of wrongdoing in these specific cases. Luna maintained her commitment to fighting insider trading despite the allegations, telling reporters she wished she possessed the telepathic abilities investigators apparently believe she has.
